The Public Option

Posted by Samuel Benjamin on Friday, October 30, 2009, In : Health Politics
I am all for creating a competitive environment in the matter of health insurance. I would like to see ALL Americans guaranteed some form of medical insurance. I am constantly befuddled as to why we would blow away money all over the world on wars we will not win and foreign aid to people who hate us and will never change their attitudes when that money can be used to create jobs, feed Americans and give us ALL health care. What are the feds thinking?

I am getting increasingly worried about th...

PAYBACK TIME

Posted by Samuel Benjamin on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, In : Health Politics
What I am about to discuss, I believe, I can say with reasonable authority as I was a corporate medical director of a large national health care insurer for more than six years. I was an academic for several years at a medical school , worked in a federally funded neighborhood (community) health center and I am now and have been before- a primary care provider engaged in the private practice of medicine. You might say I have had my foot in a number of medical and medically related doors and I...

Dead Men Walking

Posted by Samuel Benjamin on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, In : Health Politics

Last night, I was invited to a “boys” night by a good friend. The ”boys” were all MD's- specialists- mostly guys that I know and respect by the way, as individuals and physicians. I have not socialized with them for a very long time and I was looking forward to the experience. BUT, the night was depressing for me because as we hung out it became clear that we have become VERY far apart.

These docs , who in some ways are representative of docs in private practice certainly in Ari...

What Are You Afraid Of?

Posted by Samuel Benjamin on Monday, February 9, 2009, In : Health Politics
Every time there is talk about universal health coverage, the political right scares you by yelling "socialism". They warn of "long lines" for care. They warn of rationing of medical services. They yell with pride that we have the "best" medical system in the world.

Now, I am NOT on the right or the left. I AM a doctor and I want ALL American citizens to have access to health care. NO AMERICAN should worry about medical care and medicines for their families. NEVER!!!!! You will note that it i...

More, "Free" Health Care ?

Posted by Samuel Benjamin on Friday, February 6, 2009, In : Health Politics
I am a strong advocate of more access to health care for ALL Amercans. I want to see it affordable. I want to see it include integrative medicine (alternative and convenional care). I want folks to have a choice of their physicians and health care institutions. NO AMERICAN CITIZEN should go without health care coverage.

On the other hand, who is going to pay for this?  How are we going to finance more expense in a country that is on its knees financially? My greatest fear in the next year or s...

Barak- You're Smokin!

Posted by Samuel Benjamin on Saturday, January 31, 2009, In : Health Politics

From the outset, I am NOT "anti Obama". I do not want to be painted with any ridiculous such label. However, if you listen to my radio show on KTAR in Arizona then you know that I am intolerant of spin that promotes disinformation and is not truthful. The U.S. Congress is considering an historic Federal spending package that, amongst many other things, allocates a considerable amount of resources to smoking cessation because of the toll that it takes on the nation's health and, as a result,...

Community Health Centers

Posted by Samuel Benjamin on Thursday, January 29, 2009, In : Health Politics
I am hearing the term "Community Health Centers" as the "new" concept for primary care inner city and rural health care in the U.S. Well folks- been there and done that!!!     The neighborhood health centers of the 70's DID serve a purpose but DID NOT resolve health care issues for the poor or the middle class may I say. These are primary care centers, typically run with a heart but GREAT inefficiency and with some indifference from the non medical doctor employees- like government employees....
